Phoebe: Hey Sookie, what’s wrong?
Sookie: I’ve really done it this time.
Phoebe: What happened?
Sookie: I got my sister’s car in an accident.
Phoebe: Oh, no! Are you OK?
Sookie: Oh, it was just a little fender bender. Nothing to write home about…
Phoebe: OK, so why the face?
Sookie: It happened before and I promised I’d be more careful from now on.
Phoebe: I’m sure it wasn’t your fault. She’ll understand. Did you exchange insurance details with the other driver?
Sookie: Well… actually, I hit a pole.
Phoebe: Oh, I see. Yeah, I don’t think your sister will be lending you her car again!
Sookie: Any chance I can borrow yours?
Phoebe: Fat chance! I’m starting to think you’re a menace behind a wheel.
Sookie: Hey! I’m not that bad! I’m just unlucky, that’s all.

Phoebe: よかった。じゃあ、なんでそんなに困った顔してるのよ？
Sookie: 前にも事故を起こしてて。これからはもっと慎重に運転するって約束したのよ。
Phoebe: でもあなたのせいじゃないと思うわ。お姉さんもきっとわかってくれるわよ。相手のドライバーと保険会社の情報とかは、もうやり取りしたの？
Sookie: 実は･･･、電柱にぶつけたの。
Phoebe: あっ、そうなの。それじゃ、お姉さんが車を貸してくれることはもうなさそうね。
Sookie: あなたの車を借りられる可能性はあるかしら？
Phoebe: ほとんどないわ。あなたにハンドルを握らせると危険なんだって思い始めてたところ。
Sookie: ちょっと待って。そんなにひどくないわよ！ちょっと運が悪かっただけよ。
Sookie: 今回は、本当にとんでもないことしちゃったわ。
Phoebe: 何があったの？
Sookie: 姉の車で事故を起こしちゃったの。
Phoebe: まあ、大変。大丈夫？

キーフレーズ
“really done it this time” ひどくしくじってしまった
大失敗をしてしまったという意味の表現です。多くの場合、些細な失敗を続けた後の大失敗というニュアンスを含みます。
例）妻のHeatherは、夫のMarcoに対して腹を立てています。
Marco: I’m really sorry I made that joke about your mother’s hair. I didn’t mean to insult her.
Heather: Well, you know how sensitive she is to this stuff. You’ve really done it this time.
Marco: お義母さんの髪型を茶化したりして本当にごめん。バカにするようなつもりじゃなかったんだ。
Heather: うちの母親がその手のことをすぐに気にするの知ってるでしょ。今回は本当にしでかしてくれたわね。
Marco: I’m really sorry I made that joke about your mother’s hair. I didn’t mean to insult her.
Heather: Well, you know how sensitive she is to this stuff. You’ve really done it this time.
Marco: お義母さんの髪型を茶化したりして本当にごめん。バカにするようなつもりじゃなかったんだ。
Heather: うちの母親がその手のことをすぐに気にするの知ってるでしょ。今回は本当にしでかしてくれたわね。
“nothing to write home about” たいしたことない
ある事柄が特に良くも悪くもなく、ごく普通で際立ってないことを意味する表現です。
例）AntoineとAlexが昼食を食べる場所を探していると、近くにハンバーガー店がありました。
Alex: I’ve never heard of this place. Is it any good?
Antoine: I tried it last week. The burgers are nothing to write home about. Let’s go somewhere else.
Alex: 聞いたことないな、この店。おいしいのかな？
Antoine: 先週食べたけど、可もなく不可もなくって感じ。どっか他のとこ行こう。
Alex: I’ve never heard of this place. Is it any good?
Antoine: I tried it last week. The burgers are nothing to write home about. Let’s go somewhere else.
Alex: 聞いたことないな、この店。おいしいのかな？
Antoine: 先週食べたけど、可もなく不可もなくって感じ。どっか他のとこ行こう。
“why the face?” どうして浮かない顔してるの
心配そうな顔や悲しそうな顔をしている相手にその理由を聞くためのカジュアルな表現です。
例）一緒に買い物をしていたKimとSarahが新しいお店の前で立ち止まりました。
Kim: This looks new… hey, why the face?
Sarah: My favorite store used to be here.
Kim: 新しいお店ね･･･あれ、どうしたの浮かない顔して？
Sarah: 私の好きなお店がここにあったの。
Kim: This looks new… hey, why the face?
Sarah: My favorite store used to be here.
Kim: 新しいお店ね･･･あれ、どうしたの浮かない顔して？
Sarah: 私の好きなお店がここにあったの。
“fat chance” 非常に少ない見込み
あることがらが起こる可能性が極めて低い際に使われる、とてもカジュアルな表現です。
例）Calebが朝一緒にジョギングをするよう、Johnを説得しています。
Caleb: Come on! Once you’re awake, there’s nothing better than running at 6am.
John: Me? Wake up before 6am? Fat chance!
Caleb: ほんとだって。一旦その良よさがわかったら、朝の6時に走ること以上に気持ちいいことはないよ。
John: 俺が？6時前に起きる？あり得ない！
Caleb: Come on! Once you’re awake, there’s nothing better than running at 6am.
John: Me? Wake up before 6am? Fat chance!
Caleb: ほんとだって。一旦その良よさがわかったら、朝の6時に走ること以上に気持ちいいことはないよ。
