間違ったマラソンの練習計画

＜マラソン経験が長いNicoleが友人のShaunとマラソンの練習の話をしています。＞

Shaun:I feel like my time hasn’t improved at all since I started training a month ago.
Nicole:Really? I think at this stage in the game it’s hard to say.
Shaun:Don’t you think it’s strange? I’ve been working really hard, but I’m not seeing a lot of results.
Nicole:How so?
Shaun:Well, I run seven days a week every other week but it still feels like I’m improving at a snail’s pace.
Nicole:Hold the phone. You’re running every day every other week?
Shaun:Yeah, isn’t that what you’re supposed to do? I thought I read that it’s one week of running and then one week to rest…
Nicole:Oh no! You’re supposed to run one day and then give yourself at least one day to rest.
Shaun:Seriously? I’ve been running seven days in a row! This month was a total waste…
Nicole:Yeah, if you don’t give your body time to recover it defeats the purpose of training.
Shaun:I guess I’ve got to start over. Do you think you could you give me some tips?
Nicole:Sure, I’ll send you the schedule I used when I was training for my first marathon.
Shaun:Thanks!

キーフレーズ

“at this stage in the game” 現時点で

このフレーズはある期間や過程などの特定の時点や段階を意味し、くだけた会話でもフォーマルな場面でも幅広く使われる表現です。スポーツに関する文脈で試合展開について話す際によく使われる表現ですが、それ以外の日常的な場面やビジネス上のシチュエーションでも使われます。

例）KarenとボーイフレンドのLewisがラグビーの試合を観ています。
Karen:At this stage in the game, it’s really hard to say who will win.
Lewis:Yeah, we’re not even at halftime yet.
Karen:この段階でどっちが勝つかはまだわからないわね。
Lewis:ああ、まだ前半も終わってないからね。
“at a snail’s pace” のろのろと

これは“snail”（カタツムリ）のように非常にゆっくりとしたペースで移動することや物事が進むことを意味する表現です。手続きなどに非常に時間がかかるような状況に対してよく使われる表現ですが、よりカジュアルな状況で動作などが通常よりもゆっくりしている場合や思っていた以上に遅い場合にも使われます。

例）最近新しい家に引っ越したChrisが妹のVioletが話しています。
Chris:Well, we’re all moved in but still don’t have running water.
Violet:You’ve been waiting for the plumber for three days! They’re really moving at a snail’s pace.
Chris:まあ、引っ越してきたのはいいんだけど、まだ水道から水が出ないんだ。
Violet:3日も待ってるの、水道工事が来るの！本当に遅いわね、水道工事の人たち。
“hold the phone” ちょっと待って

相手の話や行為を一旦止めるために命令文の形で使われるくだけた表現です。元々は電話での会話で使われた表現ですが、比喩的に電話以外の会話でも使われるようになったフレーズです。相手の発言や行為に話し手が驚いているというニュアンスを含んで使われることがあります。

例）一緒に食事に行くためにBillが友人のNinaを迎えに来ました。
Bill:Got everything? Keys, wallet—
Nina:Hold the phone! I left the lights on in my room!
Bill:忘れ物ない？鍵とか財布とか…
Nina:ちょっと待って。部屋の電気つけっぱなしだわ！
“defeats the purpose” 台無しにする

これは、ある目的のために行っている行為を台無しにしてしまうような別の行為を行うことを意味する表現です。例えば、健康のために運動をしている人が暴飲暴食をしてしまうような状況で使われます。つまり、好ましくない行為によって、他の好ましい行為が無駄になってしまうことを言い表します。

例）Miriamが友人のWendellに自分が通っているスポーツクラブの話をしています。
Miriam:I’m going to the gym every day but there’s this really great bakery next door that has this custard cream puff I love…
Wendell:[laughs] Well, there’s your problem! That defeats the purpose of joining a gym in the first place!
Miriam:スポーツクラブに毎日通ってるんだけど、その隣にすごくおいしいパン屋さんがあって、そこのカスタードのシュークリームが大好きなの…
Wendell:[笑いながら] ほら、それがよくないんだよ！それって、そもそもジム通ってる目的に反してるじゃん。
