（1）報われる
“pay off” には、例えば努力や投資など、これまでにしてきたことが「良い結果をもたらす」「報われる」「成果をあげる」という意味があります。
- Do you think the investment will pay off?
- その投資で利益は出ると思う？
- My grandmother always told me, “Hard work pays off.”
- 私の祖母は、いつも私に「頑張れば報われる」と言っていた。
- 彼女が何時間も必死に勉強した努力がついに実り、入学試験に合格した。

“payoff” という名詞形にして使うこともあり、嬉しいまたは驚くような結果や結末、見返りといった意味を表します。

（2）借金を返済する
“pay off” には「借金を返済する」という意味もあります。この意味で使われる場合、“pay”と “off” は分けて使うことができます。
- I’ll never be able to pay off this student loan!

- この奨学金を払い終えるなんて無理だと思う！
- When are you going to finish paying off your car loan?
- “When are you going to finish paying your car loan off?
- 車のローンはいつ払い終えるの？

“pay off someone” には、「（人）を買収する」という意味があります。この意味合いで使うときも、“pay” と “off” は分けて使うことができます。
