New research from Finland found that going to the sauna regularly is good for the health of the brain and the heart.

A study by the University of Finland found that regularly going to the sauna is not only relaxing, but also really good for your health. The study took over 20 years to finish. It was done on a group of 2,315 Finnish men between 42 and 60 years old.

According to the study, men who went to a dry sauna between 4 and 7 times a week had much healthier hearts. Their brains were also healthier. They had a 65% lower risk of getting brain disease like Alzheimer’s than people who only went to the sauna once a week.

The study only measured the effects of a dry sauna, because a traditional Finnish sauna does not use steam. According to some older studies, going to a wet sauna might be harmful for people with dry skin. However, the Finnish dry sauna has no such negative effects.

Professor Jari Laukkanen was the lead scientist behind the study. According to him regular visits to a dry sauna might even reduce the risk of depression and improve memory.

Entering a sauna for around 14 minutes is good for the health because it has a similar effect to exercising. It increases body temperature, makes the heart beat faster, and so makes the blood flow faster, making the entire body work better. It also has a positive effect on brain activity. It boosts creation of new neurons, improves the connections between different brain regions. In other words, it improves the ways our brains work.

The study was, unsurprisingly, done in Finland, where the sauna is a traditional part of the local culture. In fact, the word sauna comes from the Finnish language. There are 5.4 million people living in Finland, and there are more than 3 million saunas. That’s more than one sauna for every two people!

Similarly to visiting a sauna, going to a hot spring is really good for your health. It’s good for the skin, the heart, and might help people with rheumatism. So, if you go to a gym with a sauna or live near a hot spring, it might be a good idea to visit it more often.
