Life in Japan【日本での生活】

Hello everyone! This is Taylor Foxworth from Hankyu Umeda Learning Studio again! Today I have another great opportunity to share more of my life experience with you. Today, I want to talk about my experience living here in Japan. I’ve been lucky to find many things in Japan that were lacking in my life back in Florida. Many clients tell me that there must be more to do in America because our country is so big. However, while Japan is a smaller country I have found it to be packed with more unique and wonderful experiences than I could have imagined.

In America, I sometimes didn’t know what to do with my days off because it usually meant having to drive very far. So, in America I would have characterized myself as an indoor person. Living in Japan however, I hardly spend any time at home. Instead, I use the train to visit small, unique villages or secluded mountains and valleys to escape my busy, hectic life in the big city. In America, we have trains that commute to major cities, but there aren’t many options to reach the countryside.

This availability of transportation is what has made Japan such an enjoyable place to live, because I’ve been able to see the high peaks of the Japanese Alps, to small fishing towns famous for their unique mascots. Best of all, these experiences only require me to walk to my local train station. If I have the chance, I’d love to travel as far as Hokkaido by train just so I have the chance to look out the window and see more sights.

Thank you for taking the time to read about my adventures and experiences in Japan so far. I hope I can have the chance to hear about some of your favorite travel experiences or favorite things about living in Japan!

Relocating to Japan【日本への移住】

Hello everyone! This is Taylor Foxworth from Hankyu Umeda Learning Studio! I’m excited to share more of my life experience with you in this post today. Today I wanted to talk to you all about my experience of relocating to Japan from the United States. When I was living in the United States, I worked in the legal field and it was an extremely stressful field to work in. So, in 2018, I decided to move to Japan to gain more life experience and also get a little break from the industry I was working in.

I had lived in the United States for most of my life and had little chance to travel growing up, so the idea of moving across the world seemed like a grand adventure. So, I began the process of applying for a visa and it was a mountain of paperwork. On top of that, arranging my apartment lease while out of the country was also a great challenge. Finally, everything fell into place and I had my visa, apartment lease, and plane ticket. The flight was about eighteen hours and my adventures began the moment I got off the plane.

Many expats who arrive in Japan can relate to their first time doing certain things that seem mundane to the average citizen. From my first time going to the supermarket and learning about the vast amount of ingredients that I had never seen before, to the complex yet efficient public transportation system. You never know what kind of things will intrigue, shock or amaze you when you travel or move to another country, and that is what makes it a treasured life experience. I hope we can have a lesson together soon and talk about your experiences traveling abroad and what amazed you.

In my next post, I’ll talk more about my life in Japan and some other adventures I’ve had so far!

Self-Introduction【自己紹介】

Hello everyone! My name is Taylor Foxworth, and I am an instructor at Hankyu Umeda Learning Studio. I’m originally from Orlando, Florida in the United States and I’ve been living in Osaka for about four years now. Orlando is mostly famous to people in Japan because we have many famous theme parks and beautiful beaches. Unlike Japan, which is famous for having four seasons, Florida has one season which is endless summer. Florida is also a multicultural place to live with many foods and languages from all over South America and the Caribbean. The other major difference about living in Florida is our famous prehistoric animal, the alligator.

For most of my life I have been a musician with my main instrument being the drums. I used to play in jazz groups, but I loved playing music from any genre. When I moved to Japan I felt a little homesick, so I started playing the banjo a couple years ago. The banjo is a popular musical instrument in the southern states. It’s mostly used for playing country music and folk songs, so it’s great for bringing out my inner cowboy and I can sing in the southern dialect of the United States.

Anybody who knows me will also know that I am a big hiker. I am the kind of person that loves to challenge myself and see what I’m capable of doing. I’ve climbed many mountains in the United States, Canada, and too many mountains in Japan to count. My favorite place in Japan to go hiking is in the Northern Alps. It’s the highest mountain range in Japan and has the most dynamic scenery.

Thank you for taking the time to read about me. To hear more about my experience coming to Japan, stay tuned for my next post!

Life in Japan【日本での生活】

Zoe here to share my life in Japan!

As I mentioned in my previous post, Japan holds a certain magic for me. It was the only country I visited that I never wanted to leave. So when I finally got a job and had everything set up for my new life in Japan, I started focusing on the places I wanted to visit and activities I wanted to try.

I loved the fact that there are four seasons in Japan. Singapore only has summer and the weather almost never changes. One of the first things I wanted to do was to learn one winter sport. Snowboarding looked really cool to me and after a year of settling down in Japan, I started learning snowboarding. It was FANTASTIC! I loved every bit of it. Now, every winter I take monthly trips to ski resorts to snowboard, and spring is the time for me to go on picnics under cherry blossom trees with my friends!

After about a year living in Tokyo near Shinjuku, I decided to move to Yokohama. It was time to try out a different city! I still liked Tokyo and wanted to be close to it so I could visit it easily. Yokohama is a breath of fresh air! It’s a port city with lovely skies. I made new friends who introduced me to hiking and camping. Spring, summer and autumn has now become my camping and hiking time. Going to the mountains, half-killing myself trying to reach different peaks in Japan, and enjoying nature is now something I can’t live without. Even though I grew up as a city girl, Japan has absolutely turned me into a nature woman. In Tokyo, I enjoy the night life and the city, but in Yokohama, I’m all about the nature.

The magic Japan holds never wanes!

Relocating to Japan【日本への移住】

It’s Zoe here again! As promised, I’m gonna share my relocating experience to Japan!

Before Japan, I had only done a four month internship in Los Angeles. That gave me a taste of having a life outside of Singapore, and the freedom of not living with my parents. I do love my parents a lot though!

I had a month-long vacation in Japan with my best friend a year prior to moving here, and that trip helped my best friend and I decide that we wanted to move. After returning to Singapore, we started working really hard to save up money for the move. I told my parents about my decision and they were very supportive of it. We started doing research and planned what we needed to do. We looked for jobs and had online interviews with companies in Japan. My best friend secured a job while I was still looking. With the moving date getting closer, I decided I would move with her and come to Japan first and continue looking for a job. Being physically here would give me a higher chance of getting a job. This is the first photo I took on the NEX train after landing!

It was risky and stressful but I managed to get an English teaching job after two and a half months of job-hunting. Phew! My life in Japan really started after that! I got to meet new people from all over the world, and I learned more about Japan from my clients at work while I set up my new life in Tokyo. Language was a big challenge for me but I managed to set everything up! It was a big feat for me and I was really proud of myself. My best friend and I spent all our free time together exploring the city and picking up new hobbies. Japan is magical and we love our new lives!

Keep an eye out for my next post to see why!

Self-Introduction【自己紹介】

What’s up guys! It’s Zoe. I’m from Singapore and I’ve been in Japan since December 2016.

Back in Singapore, I had multiple jobs. I worked as a dancer in an internationally famous amusement park! Can you guess where? I was also a vocalist in a band that performed for weddings and events, produced dance videos for my dance friends, and also worked part-time in a menswear apparel shop a friend of mine owns. I couldn’t find one thing to stick to!

Now I teach English at Gaba. However, I’m still interested in many things, so in my free time I camp, hike, snowboard, bake, make music, dance, and many more! I sound like I’m really active but I’m actually a house rat. Have you heard that phrase before? My friends in Singapore and I use it all the time! It means I love staying at home. I’m also excellent at entertaining myself! I stock up on groceries and then hide away at home for 4 to 5 days straight. I then shock myself with human interaction whenever I come out of my “cave”.

Japan is so much fun with lots of activities and places for me to explore and learn about myself. That’s one of the main reasons I decided to move here. As much as Singapore is my home, I craved adventure and mental stimulation. My friends would joke about me moving to Japan when I was younger, but hah! It’s not a joke anymore!

When I first got here, it was challenging as I had to figure out how to set up my new life here in Japan. Not many people know this, but when I moved to Japan, I had no job yet! But I was so eager to move here with my best friend, I just went for it. I got lucky!

Wanna know more about my relocating experience? Stay tuned for the next post on how I manage to stay in Japan!

Life in Japan【日本での生活】

Good day, dear readers! Jamieson here, and this time I would like to share how my life is going in Japan so far.

Upon arriving at Haneda airport back in 2020, I was instantly faced with my first challenge. I was staring at the bus timetable trying to figure out what bus was going in my direction. Thankfully for me, a very helpful member of staff noticed my confused expression and came over to offer their assistance. It quickly dawned on me that Japan was not a country I could get by with English alone. For once I would actually have to make an effort to learn the language!

Language barrier aside, I was able to get set up with the essentials for living in Japan. Now it was time to start my career with Gaba and explore the many wonders of Japan on my days off. Sounds great, yeah? Well, that’s what I thought, but a global pandemic was about to change everything!

Restrictions over the past two years have had a huge impact on my plans to travel Japan, but I have been able to explore my local area instead. I am a big foodie, so I have very much enjoyed trying the variety of noodle-based dishes, as well as okonomiyaki and other local delights. My chopstick skills are slowly getting better, but still leave a lot to be desired. Visiting local temples and shrines has also been a good experience. I have started collecting Goshuin stamps as a memento of each one I have visited so far.

I am of course enjoying my lifestyle in Japan so far. However, I feel that I have not experienced the true Japan yet due to the pandemic. My bucket list for Japan is forever growing longer. In preparation for returning to normal life I have taken it upon myself to learn Japanese and I am now studying every morning at a local school. It may be difficult, but it’s also fun, even though they issue homework daily and give us a test every Friday! I am making slow progress, and I may not be very good right now, but hopefully my perseverance will pay off in the end. Practice makes perfect!

Thank you very much for taking the time to read this and take care out there! Bye bye.

Relocating to Japan【日本への移住】

Hello dear readers, Jamieson again, and this time I would like to tell you about why I decided to move to Japan. Like a lot of people from overseas, my first exposure to anything Japanese was when I was young with the introduction of Japanese anime into Western media. By that age, I was already into anything that depicted martial arts, war, conflict, or stories of a fantastical nature. Naturally this led me down the path of consuming many anime series or films involving samurai, ninja, robots or anything set in feudal Japan. Accurate or not, I fell in love with the Japan these shows were portraying. The culture and atmosphere was vastly different to the Western world.

Fast forward many years, and my intrigue with Japan remained. The BBC seemed to be constantly sending over celebrities to make documentaries about Japan. Many TV shows focused on the things to see and do in Japan, like eating delicious food from one specific area, bullet trains, cultural ceremonies, the amazingly busy Shibuya pedestrian crossing, or even observing monkeys chilling out in a natural hot spring. I was fascinated with how Japan looked at the future with its technological advancements, but also kept one eye on the past. Many people cherished the history of Japan and even still practiced traditional customs. I liked this idea, as it seemed like we were quickly forgetting traditional elements of the UK to fit in with the ever-changing modern world.

Fast forward some more years, and I was at home after my recent decision to leave the British Army. I was staring out of the window, pondering about my next steps in life, wondering about what my next challenge in life would be. Suddenly I remembered my interest in Japan. I quickly calculated that I had been to most Western and European countries and experienced a fair amount of the Middle East, but I had never been to the Far East! With my cup of tea in hand, I fully committed to moving to Japan to start a new challenge in life! And as an added bonus, all my hobbies (including the more extreme ones discussed in my previous blog) can be done here also. Absolutely ideal!

Thank you for taking the time to listen to my story of how I ended up moving to Japan. Please drop by for my next post which will detail daily life in Japan and how it is all going for me so far! Until then, take care out there!

Self-Introduction【自己紹介】

Hello there dear readers, my name is Jamieson and I am from England. I grew up bouncing around the UK from place to place due to my parents serving in the Royal Air Force (RAF), but I spent the majority of my time between two areas, the well-known bustling capital of London, to the not-so-well-known slower-paced countryside of Norfolk.

As for my professional life, that has also been rather varied. I have worked in customer and IT support, sales roles, as well as having my own drone business, but the standouts were probably my time at the BBC and British Army. It was a great experience to be part of a production crew and see some of my hard work appear on TV. As for the British Army, that has shaped the person I am today. I have some amazing memories of traveling the world and experiencing different cultures, but also some good old character building moments such as training until near mental and physical exhaustion. I can assure you I look back on these moments fondly, but at the time, under duress, of course I questioned my life choices!

In terms of hobbies and interests, I like to maintain an active lifestyle. I keep fit either by running or going to the gym, as well as playing a multitude of sports. I guess you could say I am also an adrenaline junkie. I like more extreme activities like rock-climbing, scuba diving, snowboarding or even skydiving! I can honestly say that jumping out of a plane goes against every self-preservation instinct you have, but it’s one hell of a rush!

It’s not all go go go though. I am also a massive nerd and can easily sink into an RPG for a 12-hour stint of gaming, or even binge my way through the latest popular TV series. These days it seems that’s all we can do, but to be honest, it does not bother me in the slightest. I am looking forward to traveling a little bit more though. I bet you are too!

Well, that’s enough rambling from me! I hope that’s given you a little insight to who I am. If you have any questions, feel free to pop into the Learning Studio and ask me. Stay tuned for my next blog where I will write about my experiences of relocating to Japan. Until then, take care out there! Bye!

Life in Japan【日本での生活】

Hey there, readers! Mook here again with another story time. Today, I wanted to share a bit about my thoughts on living in Japan.

The best part about living here is definitely the trains! Listen, I know we all complain about JR being late all the time, but even then, the trains in Japan are so efficient, clean, and for the most part, pretty on time. When I lived in Bangkok, my apartment was four kilometers from my campus. Do you want to guess how long it took for me to get to class? On a good day, it took 30 minutes by bus. On a horrible day, it took an hour. So, trust me when I say that Japanese transportation is a dream come true!

Another thing I love about being here is there’s no shortage of things to do. There are so many places to visit around Kansai from screaming through rollercoasters in my favorite theme parks to hiking up Mt. Rokko. There are so many cafes just around Kobe alone and that list keeps growing every time I walk past a new corner. That’s the exciting part, the city keeps changing and it challenges me to keep up with it.

But there’s a downside to that too. Things change so quickly sometimes that some of my favorite things end up not being there anymore. One of the changes that really bothers me is seasonal snacks. Yes, they’re new and exciting. But they’re only around for 3 months and then they disappear forever! A few years ago, there was a mint chocolate KitKat that came out in the summer and only in that summer. I never saw it again. If you find it, please let me know!

Thanks for reading my ramblings today. See you next time, readers!
