Cherie: We can cover more ground if we split up. You take the east side of the park, and I’ll take the west side.
Raymond: I can’t believe they’re using the entire park for this egg hunt. It’s like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Let’s just go home.
Cherie: But we’ve barely even started. Come on, don’t give up already.
Raymond: What’s the point? Easter egg hunts are for kids, anyway.
Cherie: Stop being such a Negative Nancy. The grand prize is $300! Just think of all the shoes I can buy…
Raymond: Hey, don’t count your chickens before they hatch. We haven’t found a single egg yet.

Cherie: 分かれて探せば、もっと広い場所探せると思うわ。あなたは公園の東側、私は西側を探すね。
Raymond: エッグハンティングで公園全部使うなんて信じられない。こんなの探すだけ無駄だよ。見つかりっこないから、うちに帰ろうよ。
Cherie: でもまだ探し始めてもいないのよ。さあ、まだあきらめないで。
Raymond: 意味ないって。どうせ、イースターのエッグハンティングなんて子どものやることじゃん。
Cherie: そんな文句ばっかり言わないで。特賞は300ドルなのよ。考えてみて、それだけお金があったら、靴が何足買える…

キーフレーズ

“cover ground”　進展を見せる

長距離を進むことや、仕事などがはかどることを意味する表現です。

例）Anthonyが研究所の同僚Daisyと話しています。
Anthony: Sorry, I couldn’t make it to class last Thursday. What did I miss?
Daisy: We covered a lot of ground in the textbook. Make sure to read up to chapter 12.
Anthony: ごめん、先週の木曜の授業に出れなかったんだけど、どんなことやったか教えてくれる？
Daisy: 教科書、だいぶ進んだわよ。第12章まで必ず読んでおくべきね。

“(looking for/finding) a needle in a haystack”　ほとんど不可能なことをする

広い範囲で非常に小さいものを探すようなきわめて困難な作業などを指す表現です。

例）サッカーの練習に行くEdgarが母親に何か言っています。
Edgar: Mom, can you help me find my soccer cleats?
Mother: Your room is so messy, I’m not sure I can help you find anything in there. It’s like looking for a needle in a haystack!
Edgar: お母さん、スパイクがない！探してくれる？
Mother: あなたの部屋、すごく散らかってるから、あそこで何か見つけるなんてできるかわからないわ。干草の中で針を探すみたいなものだもの！

“Negative Nancy”　否定的な人

否定的、悲観的で不満や泣き言ばかり言っているような人物を指して言う表現です。

例）新しい学校の初日、尻込みするDeannaを姉のParisが安心させようとしています。
Deanna: This is going to be the worst day ever.
Paris: Don’t be such a Negative Nancy. You’ll be fine.
Deanna: 今日はこれまでで最悪の日になるわ。
Paris: そんなに悲観的になっちゃだめよ。きっと大丈夫。

“count (one’s) chickens before they hatch”　取らぬ狸の皮算用

直訳すれば「まだかえっていないひなを数えるな」です。まだ確定していないことや手に入れていないものなどに基づいて将来の計画などを立てることを意味する表現です。

例）これからある授賞式に出席する俳優のThomasが、友だちのKatieに何を着ていけばよいか聞いています。
Thomas: Hey, which tie should I wear for my thank you speech?
Katie: Don’t count your chickens before they hatch. You’re not even sure that you’ll win.
Thomas: ねえ、受賞スピーチにはどのネクタイが合うかなぁ？
Katie: それって、取らぬ狸の皮算用じゃない。まだ受賞できるかどうかもわからないのよ。
