Mandy: Hey, Pascal, welcome back. I haven’t seen you in ages!
Pascal: To be honest, I’ve been in and out of the hospital lately.
Mandy: Oh no, are you alright?
Pascal: I’m better now. The doctor put me on a cocktail of medications.
Mandy: That sounds tough. Do you mind if I ask what happened?
Pascal: I caught some sort of bacterial infection. It was pretty bad. Luckily, my girlfriend was there to nurse me back to health.
Mandy: That’s good. You seem to be doing a lot better now, especially if you’re out playing tennis.
Pascal: Yup, the doctor gave me a clean bill of health. So don’t go easy on me!

Mandy: あら、Pascal、おかえりなさい。長いこと見かけなかったけど。
Pascal: 実は、最近ずっと病院通いが続いてたんだ。
Mandy: まあ、大丈夫なの？
Pascal: 今はよくなってるよ。医者がいろいろ薬を出してくれたから。
Mandy: 大変だったみたいね。どこが悪かったのか聞いてもいいかしら？
Pascal: 細菌感染症にかかったんだよ。ほんとにひどくてさ。まあ、僕の彼女が看病してくれて元気になれたからよかったけど。
Mandy: それはよかったわ。すっかり元気になったみたいね、テニスしに来れるようになったなら。
Pascal: うん。医者が太鼓判捺すほど健康だって。だからテニスで手加減なんかしなくていいからね！

キーフレーズ

“in and out of the hospital”　何度も病院に通う、入退院を繰り返す

重い病気を患った場合などで、続けて何度も病院に通わなければならない状況や入退院を繰り返すような状況を意味します。

例）Ellieが息子が生まれた兄のMasonと話しています。
Ellie: Congratulations! How are my nephew and sister-in-law doing?
Mason: They’re great. We were in an out of the hospital during the pregnancy, but the delivery went perfectly.
Ellie: おめでとう！赤ちゃんとお義姉さんは元気？
Mason: うん、二人とも元気。妊娠中はしょっちゅう病院行ったりしてたんだけど、出産は全く問題なく済んだよ。

“cocktail (of medications)”　（複数の薬の）組み合わせ

ある病気を治療するための複数の薬の組み合わせのことをこのように言います。文脈によっては、“cocktail”だけでも使われます。（例）“They put him on a cocktail as soon as I was diagnosed.”（診察を受けるとすぐ、彼には複数の薬による投薬治療が行われた。）

例）Miaが季節性のアレルギーのある友人のRyanと話しています。
Mia: Your allergies seem to be getting better.
Ryan: Yeah, the doctor put me on a cocktail of drugs that has been really effective.
Mia: アレルギーの症状、よくなってるみたいじゃない。
Ryan: うん、医者がいくつか薬を組み合わせてくれて、それがほんとによく効いてるんだ。

“nurse (one) back to health”　回復するまで看病する

病気やケガなどが治って回復するまで人を世話することを意味する表現です。

例）仕事から帰ったGregが病気で家にいたルームメートのSeamusと話しています。
Greg: Are you feeling any better today?
Seamus: Not much, life was so much easier when I was a kid and had my mom to nurse me back to health.
Greg: 昨日より具合はよくなった？
Seamus: あんまり。子ども頃は母親が治るまで世話してくれたから、ずっと楽だったよな。

“clean bill of health”　健康証明書

医師の診断を受け、健康であるというお墨付きをもらうことを意味するフレーズです。

例）Zachは事故のケガから最近回復した友人のAlexと話しています。
Zach: Are you sure you should be running a marathon so soon after your accident?
Alex: I’m fine! The doctor gave me a clean bill of health.
Zach: 事故の後、そんなにすぐにマラソンなんか走ってほんとにいいの？
Alex: 大丈夫。回復したっていう医者のお墨付きもらってるから。
