Mandy: Did you hear? Jane got married last weekend!
Elena: Are you serious? I feel like everyone and their mother is getting married lately.
Mandy: June is a popular month for weddings. Every girl wants to be a June bride!
Elena: What about you? Are you going to jump on the bandwagon?
Mandy: Me? No way! Not in the foreseeable future.
Elena: Really? But you’ve been dating Dan for over 4 years now!
Mandy: Don’t get me wrong, I love Dan. But I’m not ready to tie the knot.
Elena: You’re still young, so I guess there’s no reason to rush.
Mandy: Yeah, and we just moved in together. We’ll see how that goes.
Elena: So you’re just testing the waters for now?
Mandy: Exactly!

Mandy: 聞いた？ Janeが先週末結婚したんだって。
Elena: ほんとに？最近結婚する人がすごく多い気がするんだけど。
Mandy: 6月って式を挙げるのに人気の月だからね。女の子はみんなジューン・ブライドになりたいのよ。
Elena: あなたはどうなの？その流れに乗ってみるの？
Mandy: 私？あり得ないわ。当分の間そんなことはないわ。
Elena: ほんとに？でも、Danとはもう4年以上も付き合ってるじゃない。
Mandy: 誤解しないで。Danのことは好きよ。でも、結婚はまだよ。
Elena: まだ若いんだから、あせる必要ないと思うわ。
Mandy: うん。最近一緒に住み始めたのよ。一緒に暮らすとどんな感じなのか様子を見るつもり。
Elena: じゃあ、とりあえずは予行演習ってとこね。
Mandy: その通りよ。

キーフレーズ

“everyone and their mother”　非常に多くの人

人の数が非常に多いことを意味するカジュアルな表現です。

例）NoahとPaulが一緒に行ったコンサートの話をしています。
Noah: The concert last night was amazing!
Paul: I can’t believe how packed it was. Seems like everyone and their mother was there!
Noah: 昨日のコンサートはすごかったね。
Paul: 信じられない人込みだったな。すごくたくさんの人が来てたみたいだよ！

“jump on the bandwagon”　便乗する

時流や流行などに乗って、多くの人がすることを自分もやろうとすることを意味するフレーズです。

例）Lisaは友人のKateと自分が試しているダイエットについて話しています。
Lisa: I feel great and I’ve lost a ton of weight.
Kate: Wow, maybe I should jump on the bandwagon, too!
Lisa: 気分爽快だし、体重もすごく落ちた。
Kate: すごい、たぶん私も流行に乗っかったほうがよさそうね。

“tie the knot”　結婚する

男女が婚姻関係になることを意味するカジュアルな表現です。

例）RickとZoeは友人Tomの結婚式に出席しています。
Rick: I can’t believe Tom finally tied the knot!
Zoe: I know! I thought he was going to be a bachelor forever.
Rick: Tomがとうとう身を固めたとは、信じられないな。
Zoe: ほんとに。死ぬまで独身だと思ってたよ。

“test the waters”　事前調査をする

重要な決定などを下す前に、まず試しにやってみてうまくいくかどうかを確認することを意味する表現です。

例）ThomasとRobertが地元のスポーツクラブの話をしています。
Thomas: I heard you signed up for that new bouldering class at the gym.
Robert: Well, I’m taking a trial lesson to test the waters before I sign up for a full course.
Thomas: スポーツクラブでボルダリングのコースに申し込んだんだって？
Robert: いや、とりあえず体験レッスン受けて、様子見てからコースに申し込むつもり。
