Richard: Honey, I think we need to talk about Brandon.
Karen: What’s going on?
Richard: I’m pretty sure he had one too many when he came home last Friday.
Karen: Really? That doesn’t seem like him.
Richard: He’s been acting a little bit out of character recently.
Karen: That really surprises me. He’s always been such a sensible kid.
Richard: It’s a big problem in college these days. Kids often go on a bender to fit in with their peers.
Karen: What do you suppose we should do about it?
Richard: Why don’t we sit down with Brandon and talk about it?
Karen: That sounds like a good idea. Hopefully we can nip this problem in the bud.

Richard: ねえ、ちょっとBrandonのこと話さなきゃならないと思うんだけど。
Karen: どうかしたの？
Richard: この前の金曜日は明らかに飲みすぎて帰ってきたと思うんだ。
Karen: 本当に？あの子らしくないわね。
Richard: 最近ちょっといつもと違った感じなんだよね。
Karen: それは驚きだわ。いつもあんなに分別のある子だったのに。
Richard: 最近、大学で大きな問題になってるようだよ。若い子って、仲間内で浮いたりしないようにするために飲みすぎちゃうことがよくあるからね。
Karen: どうしたらいいと思う？
Richard: 一度ひざを交えて、Brandonと話してみないか？
Karen: それがよさそうね。たいした問題じゃないうちに解決できるといいわ。

キーフレーズ

“have one too many”　深酒をする

お酒を飲みすぎることを上品に言い表すフレーズです。

月曜の朝、BrianとTimがおしゃべりをしています。
Brian: I had the worst hangover on Saturday. I felt sick all day.
Tim: Sounds like you definitely had one too many on Friday night!
Brian: 土曜日は今までで一番ひどい二日酔いで、一日中気持ち悪かったよ。
Tim: 金曜の夜に深酒したってことだね。

“out of character”　普段と違う

人が普段と違った振る舞い方をしていることを言い表すフレーズです。

LauraとMarkがクラスメートのKyleのことを話しています。
Laura: Kyle hasn’t been showing up to class lately. It’s so unlike him!
Mark: Yeah, he’s been acting out of character. I heard his girlfriend broke up with him.
Laura: Kyleって最近授業来てないけど、彼らしくないよね。
Mark: うん、このところ、あいつらしくないね。なんか彼女に振られたって聞いたよ。

“go on a bender”　酒を飲みすぎる

短時間に大量の酒を飲むことを意味するカジュアルな表現です。

MeganとNicoleが招待されたパーティーについて話しています。
Nicole: I think we’re a little too old for college parties.
Megan: You’re right. I don’t feel like spending my weekend going on a bender and being hungover the next day.
Nicole: 大学のパーティーって、もうちょっと若い子が行くもんだと思うけど。
Megan: そうね。大酒飲んで翌日二日酔いっていうので週末つぶしたくないわ。

“nip (something) in the bud”　（問題などに）早めに対処する

問題などが時間の経過とともに悪化したり、より大きな問題になる前の段階で対処することを意味する表現です。

StephanieとHeatherが体重の話をしています。
Stephanie: I really need to go on a diet. I’ve put on so much weight over Christmas.
Heather: I had the same problem. I nipped it in the bud by eating healthy and exercising more when I first started to gain weight.
Stephanie: ほんと、ダイエットしなきゃ。クリスマスの休暇中にすごく太ったわ。
Heather: 私も太ったけど、最初に太り始めたときに、ヘルシーな食事と運動で未然に防いだわ。
