Doctor: What seems to be the problem?
Veronica: I have a fever and a sore throat.
Doctor: Anything else?
Veronica: I haven’t got a wink of sleep in the last two days.
Doctor: You may have the summer flu. You should probably stay home for a while.
Veronica: What, really? I have a vacation planned!
Doctor: I know it’s a bitter pill to swallow, but you’re probably contagious.
Veronica: How long do I have to stay home for?
Doctor: I recommend about three to four days.
Veronica: Oh, wow. I was looking forward to my vacation, but this really puts a damper on it.
Doctor: I’ll prescribe you something and hopefully you’ll feel better soon.
Veronica: Thanks, Doctor. I’ll just have to make the most of my days off after I get better.

キーフレーズ
“not get a wink of sleep” 全く眠れない
何らかの理由で夜全く睡眠を取れないことを意味する表現です。上記のsleepは名詞ですが、動詞のsleepを使って、not sleep a winkと言うこともできます。
例）Jillが友人のStuartと話しています。
Stuart: So, you’re still having trouble sleeping?
Jill: Yeah, it’s terrible. I couldn’t sleep a wink last night.
Stuart: まだ眠れなくて困ってるの？
Jill: そうなの、最悪よ。昨日なんて一睡もできなかったわ。

“bitter pill to swallow” 受け入れがたい状況
自分にとって不愉快な出来事や事実などを受け入れなければならない状況を意味するフレーズです。
例）IanとPedroが応援しているサッカーチームの話をしています。
Ian: I can’t believe two more players got injured!
Pedro: It’s a bitter pill to swallow, but the rest of the team just has to work harder.
Ian: さらに2人も負傷者が出るなんて、信じられないよ。
Pedro: ちょっと受け入れがたいよな。でも、残った選手が頑張ってやらなきゃだ。
Ian: I can’t believe two more players got injured!

“put a damper on (something)” ～に水を差す
楽しみにしていた予定や重要なイベントなどを中止せざるを得なくさせたり、それらをあまり楽しめなくなるようにすることを意味する表現です。
例）Masonと姉のOliviaが話しています。楽しみにしていたバーベキューが中止になったようです。
Mason: What a shame! The rainy weather really put a damper on our barbecue plans.
Olivia: Don’t worry! We can have a barbecue next Saturday!
Mason: 残念！バーベキューの予定だったのに、雨で水を差されたな。
Olivia: 大丈夫よ。今度の土曜日にできるから！

“make the most of (something)” ～を最大限に活用する
人やもの、または状況などからできるだけ多くの利益や楽しみなどを得ようとすることを意味するフレーズです。
例）SantiagoとKatrinaが3連休の予定について話しています。
Santiago: This weekend you want to go to the zoo and the museum and a theme park and also see a movie?
Katrina: Come on, we have to make the most of the three-day weekend!
Santiago: 今度の週末に動物園と博物館とテーマパークに行きたくて、それに映画も見たいって？
Katrina: いいじゃない。3連休を最大限に活用しなきゃ！
Santiago: This weekend you want to go to the zoo and the museum and a theme park and also see a movie?
Katrina: Come on, we have to make the most of the three-day weekend!
