「大さじ」って英語で?

砂糖を少なくとも大さじ1くらい入れるのが好きだな。じゃないと甘くないからね。

解説

調味料などを計量スプーンで計る際の「大さじ」は英語で “tablespoon”、「小さじ」は “teaspoon” と言います。“tablespoon” はもともと料理を取り分けるためのスプーン、“teaspoon” はもともとコーヒーや紅茶などの飲み物をかき混ぜるためのスプーンだといわれています。

“The size of a teaspoon is different in different countries, but it’s always smaller than a tablespoon.”
(小さじの分量は国によって多少違うが、必ず大さじよりは小さい。)

「大さじ(小さじ)~杯の…」は、“~ tablespoon(teaspoon)of …”“~ tablespoonful(teaspoonful) of …” と表現することができます。

“If you add more than one teaspoonful of salt, then it won’t taste very good.”
(小さじ1杯以上の塩を入れると、あまり美味しくなくなるよ。)

ジョンのセリフも以下のように表現できます。

“I like to put in at least a tablespoon of sugar, because it’s not sweet otherwise.”
(砂糖を少なくとも大さじ1くらい入れるのが好きだ。そうしないと甘くないから。)

なおレシピなどでは、“tablespoon” は “tbsp”、“teaspoon” は “tsp” と省略して表記されることが多いです。
