「増税」は英語で ”tax increase” と言います。「増税する」というように動詞で使いたい場合は、“increase taxes” または “raise taxes” と表現します。

ジェシカのセリフも以下のように表現できます。

“The tax increase doesn’t start from this year, but from next year.”
（増税が始まるのは、今年からじゃなく来年からだ。）

“Now that discussions of a tax increase are being raised, we’d better hurry up and buy a home.”
（増税の議論が持ち上がっていることだし、早く家を買おう。）

“tax hike” も同じく「増税」を意味しますが、こちらは ”tax increase” と比べ、ややネガティブな印象があります。例えば、誰かが「増税」について批評をしたりする際に使われることがあります。

“Many people objected to last year’s tax hikes, but the market has been gradually recovering.”
(多くの人が去年の増税に反対していたけど、景気は徐々に回復しているね。)

“According to public opinion polls, many people opposed the timing of the tax hike.”
（世論調査によると、多くの国民は増税のタイミングに反対した。）

一方、「減税」は英語で “tax reduction” と言います。「減税する」というように動詞で使う場合は、“lower taxes” または “reduce taxes” で表すことができます。

“The tax reduction that started this year has enriched the lives of many.”
(今年から始まった減税は、沢山の人の暮らしを豊かにしているよ。)

ちなみに、日本語の「～税」と言うのと同じく、英語でも “～ tax” で表現されます。「消費税」は “consumption tax” または “sales tax”、「所得税」は “income tax” と言います。その他にも、「贈与税」は “gift tax” 、「酒税」は “liquor tax” などと表すことができます。
