Sam: So what are you and William doing for Valentine’s Day this year?
Carrie: I’m not sure yet, but I have a feeling he’s got something big up his sleeve.
Sam: Oh? He took you out to a show and a really nice dinner last year, didn’t he?
Carrie: Yeah, but I think he might just outdo himself this time. I heard him making reservations for that restaurant at the top of Sky Tower!
Sam: Wow, fancy! Do you think he’s going to pop the question?
Carrie: No, don’t say that! I mean, I’d love it if he did but I don’t want to jinx it.
Sam: Well, I wouldn’t be surprised if he did. You two are obviously head over heels for each other.

キーフレーズ
“have something up (one’s) sleeve” ひそかに準備する
人を驚かせるようなことをひそかに準備していることを意味する表現です。
例）同僚のSasha とMichaelが会社のかくし芸大会について話しています。
Sasha: Are you doing anything for the talent show?
Michael: Yeah, I’ve got something up my sleeve.
Sasha: あなた、 かくし芸大会で何かするの？
Michael: うん、ちょっとひそかに準備してることがあるんだ。
Sasha: Are you doing anything for the talent show?
Michael: Yeah, I’ve got something up my sleeve.
Sasha: あなた、 かくし芸大会で何かするの？
Michael: うん、ちょっとひそかに準備してることがあるんだ。
“outdo (oneself)” それまで最高の出来を上回る
それまでの最高の成果を上回ること、自己記録などを更新することを意味する表現です。
例）Christieが友人Bobbyの誕生日にチーズケーキを作りました。
Christie: So how did you like the cheesecake? Was it okay?
Bobby: You really outdid yourself this time! That was the best. Thanks!
Christie: チーズケーキどうだった？おいしかった？
Bobby: 本当に前回のを超えてるね。今までで一番おいしかった。ありがとう！

“pop the question” プロポーズする
相手に結婚を申し込むことを意味する表現です。
例）コーヒーショップのバリスタのJackとKarenが前日店で起こったことについて話しています。
Jack: You won’t believe it. Some guy popped the question in the middle of the shop last night and his girlfriend turned him down.
Karen: That’s awful! Poor guy…
Jack: 信じてくれないかもしれないけど、昨日店の真ん中で男がプロポーズしたんだけど、相手が断ったんだよ。
Karen: それはひどい！気の毒に･･･。
Jack: You won’t believe it. Some guy popped the question in the middle of the shop last night and his girlfriend turned him down.

Jack: 信じてくれないかもしれないけど、昨日店の真ん中で男がプロポーズしたんだけど、相手が断ったんだよ。

“jinx” （自分の行為や発言が）災いをもたらす
ある出来事について、それが実際に起こる前に過度に期待したり、それについて話したりすることによって残念な結果をもたらすことを意味する表現です。
例）DylanとSimoneが水泳大会について話しています。
Dylan: So, it seems like a pretty sure thing that you’re going to win first place, right?
Simone: No, I don’t want to jinx it! I’m just going to try my best.
Dylan: 君が優勝するのは間違いなさそうじゃない？
Simone: そんなこと言わないで、ぬか喜びはしたくないから。私は、全力を尽くすだけよ。

“head over heels” （異性に）夢中である
恋愛の相手に夢中であること、ほれ込んでいることを表すフレーズです。
例）KellyとVickieが去年失恋を経験した友人Parkerについて話しています。
Kelly: Have you seen Parker lately? He seems really different than a year ago.
Vickie: Yeah, he and his new girlfriend are head over heels for each other. They seem so happy.
Kelly: 最近Parkerに会った？1年前とは別人みたいよ。
Vickie: 新しい彼女とは、お互いに夢中になってるの。二人ともすごく幸せそう
