Maria:Honey, there’s something we need to talk about. You know how Luke’s field day is coming up?
Matt:Yeah, he’s been talking about it for weeks. What about it?
Maria:Well, when I took him to school this morning, he said he doesn’t want to go.
Matt:Really? It sounds like he’s made a total about-face then.
Maria:Yeah, I was also a bit surprised, to be honest.
Matt:So did you find out why?
Maria:Well, when I asked him, he completely closed up.
Matt:Do you think he’s being bullied at school?
Maria:Hmm… he usually seems fine after school, but he might just be putting on a brave face…
Matt:Whatever it is, it worries me. We need to get to the bottom of this.
Maria:I agree. I’ll speak to his teacher tomorrow.

Maria:ねえ、あなた、ちょっと話さないといけないことがあるの。Lukeの運動会があるの知ってるわよね？
Matt:うん、この1週間ずっとその話してるからな、あいつ。それがどうかしたの？
Maria:それがね、今朝、学校に連れて行ったときに、行きたくないって言うのよ、あの子。
Matt:本当に？それじゃ、まるっきり態度が変わったみたいだな。
Maria:そうなの、私も正直ちょっと驚いたわ。
Matt:それで、どうしてそうなったのかわかったの？
Maria:それが、私が聞くと、何も話さずに黙り込んでしまったのよ。
Matt:学校でいじめられたりしてると思う？
Maria:うーん、いつも学校の後そんな素振りは見せてないけど、ただ強がって、平気なふりをしているだけかもしれないけど…
Matt:何であれ、心配だな。原因を突き止める必要があるな。
Maria:私もそう思うわ。明日先生と話してみるわ。

キーフレーズ

“make a (total/complete) about-face”　（完全に）態度を変える

意見や方針などを突然、180度変えることを意味する表現です。

例）Paulaはもうすぐ婚約者のEmily と結婚する友人のRalph と話しています。
Paula: How’s wedding planning going?
Ralph: Not so good. First, Emily wanted to have a quiet wedding at home, and now she’s made a complete about-face and wants a big wedding in Hawaii.
Paula: 式の準備はどう？
Ralph: あんまり順調じゃないんだ。最初Emilyは自宅で落ち着いた式を挙げたいって言ってたのに、今はガラッと変わってハワイで盛大にやりたいって言ってるんだよ。

“close up”　口を閉ざす

黙り込んで話すことを拒むことや突然話すことをやめることを意味する表現です。

例）Kyleは友人のStanleyと自分のガールフレンドの話をしています。
Stanley: So, you still haven’t figured out why your girlfriend is so angry with you?
Kyle: I have no clue, man! Every time I ask her what’s wrong, she completely closes up.
Stanley: じゃあ、まだわからないんだ、何でお前の彼女がそんなに怒ってるか？
Kyle: 見当もつかないんだよ！何がいけないんだって聞いても、完全に黙り込んじゃってさ。

“put on a brave face”　平気な顔を装う

実際には困難な状況であるのに、あたかも何も問題がないかのように振舞うことを意味する表現です。

例）最近飼っていた犬が死んでしまったMollyが友人のLinahと話しています。
Linah: So, how are you? Are you doing OK?
Molly: Not really, but I have to put on a brave face at work.
Linah: なあ、調子はどうだい？元気になった？
Molly: あんまり。でも、仕事中は普通に振舞わなきゃいけないのよ。

“get to the bottom of (something)”　～の原因を突き止める

ある問題などの原因や事件などの真相を突き止めることを意味する表現です。

例）インターネットに接続できないことでFinnが母親のEdithに文句を言っています。
Finn: Why is the internet still not working? This is so annoying!
Edith: I don’t know. I called the provider this morning, and they’re still trying to get to the bottom of it.
Finn: 何でまだインターネットにつながらないの？すごくウザいんだけど！
Edith: 知らないわよ。今朝電話したから、プロバイダーが原因を突き止めようとしているところじゃない。
