＜Dawsonは友人のChristinaと夏が終わる前にもう一度だけ海に行く話しをしています。＞

Christina:It’s getting cooler already, isn’t it?
Dawson:Yeah, I’ve already seen some leaves change color.
Christina:Summer came and went so fast this year…
Dawson:You know, I have half a mind to go to the beach one last time.
Christina:That sounds like a great idea! When are you going?
Dawson:I was thinking next Saturday would be good.
Christina:Mind if I keep you company?
Dawson:Sure, be my guest!
Christina:OK, great! I’ll bring some beach toys, and snacks, and drinks…
Dawson:I come up with the best ideas, don’t I?
Christina:You do have your moments.
Dawson:Very funny, Christina.

Christina:もう涼しくなってきたわね。
Dawson:そうだね、もう葉の色が変わってきてる木を見たよ。
Christina:今年も夏はあっという間に終わったわ…
Dawson:そういえば、最後にもう一回海に行こうかなって思ってるんだけど。
Christina:それはいい考えね。いつ行くの？
Dawson:今度の日曜なんかいいんじゃないかなって思ってるんだ。
Christina:一緒に行ってもいいかしら？
Dawson:もちろんさ、ぜんぜん構わないよ！
Christina:よかった！私持っていくわ、何か海で遊べるものと、食べ物と飲み物とか…
Dawson:すごくいいこと思いつくと思わない、僕って？
Christina:たまにね。
Dawson:Christina、何だよ、それ。

キーフレーズ

“have half a mind”　～することを考えている

何かをすることを前向きに検討しているが、まだ最終的な結論には至っていない場合に使われる表現です。

例）少し体調を崩しているBrendaにルームメートのJamesが話しかけています。
James:You haven’t been feeling well for a couple of days, right? You should rest.
Brenda:I have half a mind to take tomorrow off, but we’re really busy at the office right now.
James:ここ何日か体調がよくなんだろ？体を休めたほうがいいよ。
Brenda:明日休もうかなって考えてるんだけど、今すごく仕事が忙しいんだ。

“keep (someone) company”　～と一緒に過ごす

人と一緒に時間を過ごすことやどこかに一緒に出かけることを意味するフレーズです。

例）電車が来るまでかなり待たなければならないMariaが友人のTaraに愚痴を言っています。
Maria:Ugh, I hate waiting by myself. What am I going to do for the next two hours?
Tara:Oh, don’t worry. I’ll keep you company until the train gets here.
Maria:あーあ、ひとりで待つのやだな。2時間も何してようかしら？
Tara:あら、大丈夫よ。電車が来るまで一緒にいてあげるから。

“be my guest”　どうぞご自由に

何かをしても差し支えがないかと尋ねてきた相手に対して快く許可を与える際に使われるフレーズです。

例）Robは炎天下の中歩いて友人Jimの家までやってきました。
Rob:Would you mind if I took a shower here? I feel really sweaty.
Jim:Be my guest! You can use one of the spare towels on the shelf.
Rob:シャワーとか浴びさせてもらってもいいかな。すごく汗びっしょりなんだ。
Jim:いいよ、いいよ。棚にあるタオル使っていいから。

“have (one’s) moments”　いい時もある

人やものが常に優れているわけではないけれども、一時的または部分的に優れていたり、成功を収めているような場合に使われる表現です。

例）EmmaとTimが共通の友人Barneyの話をしています。
Emma:Barney really helped me out when I moved. I didn’t know he could be so organized!
Tim:Oh yeah, he has his moments, doesn’t he?
Emma:引っ越しのときBarneyが本当によく手伝ってくれたのよ。あんなにまめな人だって知らなかったわ。
Tim:へえ、そうなんだ。あいつにもいいところがあるってことだね。
