Kayla:Halloween is just around the corner! Are you going to Jenna’s costume party?
Lucy:I’m not sure yet if I can make it… what about you?
Kayla:I’m definitely going! It was so much fun last year.
Lucy:Ah yeah, I remember you saying that you had a ball. What are you going to wear this year?
Kayla:I want to try something really scary this time. I saw a tutorial online about how to do realistic zombie makeup.
Lucy:Wow, sounds cool… when I go to Halloween parties, I usually just go for a funny costume.
Kayla:Yeah, me too. You should’ve seen Jenna, though! She had this drop-dead Superwoman costume last year.
Lucy:Haha, with her hourglass figure, she must have looked amazing. Have you decided yet what you’ll bring?
Kayla:My pumpkin cupcakes were a huge crowd-pleaser last time, so I’ll probably just make those again.
Lucy:Save one for me!

Lucy:あはは、あの砂時計みたいにくびれたボディーなら、きっとすごかったでしょうね。何かもってくものも、もう決めたの？
Kayla:前回は私が作ったパンプキンカップケーキが大人気だったの。だから、たぶんまた作るわ。
Lucy:私の分1つ取っといてね！
Lucy:行けるかどうかまだわかんない… あなたは？
Kayla:もちろん行くわ。去年のはすごく楽しかったもん。
Lucy:そうだったわね、すごく楽しんだってあなたが言ってたの覚えてるわ。今年は何を着て行くの？

キーフレーズ
“just around the corner” もうすぐだ
ある行事などが間もなく行われることや祝祭日などが近づいていることを言う際に使われる表現です。
例）Jeremyと同僚のTomが話しています。
Jeremy:I really need to buy some new clothes…
Tom:You might want to wait a few weeks. With Christmas just around the corner, all the malls are going to be super crowded with people looking for gifts.
Jeremy:そろそろ新しい服買わないといけないな…
Tom:2、3週間待ったほうがいいかもよ。クリスマスが近いから、どこのショッピングモールもプレゼントを買いに来る人ですごく混むはずだから。
Jeremy:I really need to buy some new clothes…
Tom:You might want to wait a few weeks. With Christmas just around the corner, all the malls are going to be super crowded with people looking for gifts.
Jeremy:そろそろ新しい服買わないといけないな…
Tom:2、3週間待ったほうがいいかもよ。クリスマスが近いから、どこのショッピングモールもプレゼントを買いに来る人ですごく混むはずだから。
“drop-dead (something)” 目を見張るような
この表現は非常に素晴らしく、人目を引くような人やものに対して使われます。“a drop-dead evening gown”（驚くほど見事なイブニングドレス）のように形容詞として使うことも、“drop-dead handsome/gorgeous”（目を見張るほど顔立ちのいい／豪華な）のように副詞として使うこともできます。
例）式の準備を終えたDianeが花嫁付き添い人のLisaと話しています。
Diane:OK, I’m done. How do I look?
Lisa:Drop-dead gorgeous. Seriously, you’re the most beautiful bride I’ve ever seen!
Diane:さあ、準備ができたわ。どうかしら？
Lisa:驚くほどきれいよ。私が今まで見たうちで一番きれいな花嫁だわ！
Diane:OK, I’m done. How do I look?
Lisa:Drop-dead gorgeous. Seriously, you’re the most beautiful bride I’ve ever seen!
Diane:さあ、準備ができたわ。どうかしら？
Lisa:驚くほどきれいよ。私が今まで見たうちで一番きれいな花嫁だわ！
“hourglass figure” ウエストがくびれた体形
“hourglass（砂時計）”のようにウエストがくびれて、バストやヒップに丸みのある体形の女性に対して使われる表現です。欧米ではこうした体形が理想的であると多くの女性に考えられています。
例）SarahとボーイフレンドのMaverickが一緒にファッション雑誌を見ています。
Sarah:All of these models are so gorgeous. Which do you prefer, a slim body or an hourglass figure?
Maverick:Doesn’t matter to me. I like you just the way you are.
Sarah:ここに載ってるモデルみんなすごくきれいだわ。あなたはどっちが好き、やせてる体形、それとも砂時計みたいな体形？
Maverick:どっちでもいいな。僕はそのままの君が好きだよ。
Sarah:All of these models are so gorgeous. Which do you prefer, a slim body or an hourglass figure?
Maverick:Doesn’t matter to me. I like you just the way you are.
Sarah:ここに載ってるモデルみんなすごくきれいだわ。あなたはどっちが好き、やせてる体形、それとも砂時計みたいな体形？

“crowd-pleaser” 多くの人を引き付ける人やもの
パーティーなどで最も人気があり、多くの人を引き付ける人物やものなどに対して使われる表現です。
例）Johnと同僚のCalebが職場でのパーティーを企画しています。
John:I’d like to do something fun at the company party this month, but I’m not sure what.
Caleb:Oh, you should totally do a performance of “I Can’t Go for That” – it’s always such a crowd-pleaser when you sing it at karaoke!
John:今月の社内パーティーで何か面白いことをしたいんだけど、何したらいいかわからないや。
Caleb:えっ、絶対“I Can’t Go for That”だって。お前があれをカラオケで歌うと、いつだって大人気じゃないか！
