＜2人は旅行の準備をしていますが、Laraは随分時間がかかっています。＞

Lara: Our flight leaves in just 6 hours and we haven’t even started packing yet!
Shani: There’s no need to panic. I already did a dry run last week.
Lara: I’ve never met anyone who takes packing so seriously.
Shani: Hey, it pays to be prepared. By the way, all those clothes aren’t going to fit in that tiny suitcase.
Lara: Don’t worry, I have a technique. It involves sitting on the suitcase to shut it.
Shani: Well, mine should have a bit of space to spare so I’ll take some of your stuff if you want.
Lara: Are you kidding? We’ll need that for souvenirs. I’m not coming back empty handed.
Shani: You really don’t know how to travel light, do you?
Lara: Less talking, more packing! The clock is ticking!
Shani: You’re one to talk! I’m almost done.
Shani: There’s no need to panic. I already did a dry run last week.

Lara: 冗談でしょ？そこはお土産入れる場所じゃない。何も買わずに帰って来るわけじゃないし。
Shani: あなたって本当に身軽に旅できない人ね。
Lara: おしゃべりはいいから、手を動かすのよ。時間がどんどん過ぎてゆくわ。
Shani: おしゃべりしてるのはあなたよ。私は終わりそうよ。

キーフレーズ
“dry run” 予行演習
ある事柄を最初から最後まで通しで練習してみる、つまりリハーサルや予行演習することを意味します。
例）Helenは友人のRuthがプレゼンの準備をするのを手伝っています。
Ruth: I’m not exactly sure if I have enough material to fill up 45 minutes.
Helen: Why don’t you do a dry run and I’ll time you.
Ruth: 45分もつだけの内容かどうか、ちょっとわからないな。
Helen: 通しでリハーサルしてみたら？時間計ってあげるから。

“it pays to～” ～して損はない
ある事柄が有益であること、それをすることによって報われることを示すフレーズです。
例）ConnorはEmmaと一緒に公園でお昼を食べています。
Connor: That fried chicken was delicious but now my hands are all greasy.
Emma: Don’t worry, I always keep wet wipes in my bag. It pays to keep some at hand.
Connor: フライドチキンおいしかったけど、手がベタベタだ。
Emma: 大丈夫よ、私いつもウェットティッシュをバッグに入れてるから。持ってるといろいろ役に立つのよ。

何も持っていないことを表します。お土産などを持参していない状態を言うのによく使われます。
例）Leonは来週ガールフレンドの両親に会うことを友人のMartinに話しています。

Martin: I don’t know, you should find out what they like. You definitely can’t go empty handed though.
Leon: 花とかワインとか持っていった方がいいのかな。
Martin: どうかしら。ご両親が好きなものとか調べといた方がいいかもよ。手ぶらは絶対やめた方がいいわね。

大きな荷物は持たず、必要最小限の用意で旅行することを意味します。
例）Tanyaは友人のTobyを空港まで車で迎えに来ました。
Tanya: Don’t you have another suitcase? That bag doesn’t look big enough.
Toby: No, I prefer to travel light. If I get desperate, I can always do laundry here.
Tanya: 他にスーツケースとかないの？そのかばんあんまり大きくなさそうだけど。
Toby: ないよ。身軽な旅が好きなんだ。どうしても必要になったら、こっちで洗濯すればいいんだし。
