Trina: A penny for your thoughts?
Marc: Oh, I was just thinking about settling down in New York. It’s a great city.
Trina: I’d love that. My job is great, but I think we need some stability.
Marc: We’ve been moving around too much, haven’t we?
Trina: Yeah, I’m tired of living out of a suitcase.
Marc: Do you think we should buy or rent?
Trina: I don’t know… How much do you think it would cost to buy?
Marc: Your guess is as good as mine. It would be nice to have our own place, but…
Trina: It’s probably a bit beyond our means at the moment, especially in New York.
Marc: Doesn’t your cousin work in real estate? Maybe we should ask him for advice.
Trina: Yeah, he might able to pull a few strings. I’ll call him tomorrow.

Trina: 何考え込んでるの？
Marc: あっ、ニューヨークに定住したらどうかなって考えてたんだ。すごくいい街だからさ。
Trina: いいわね。今の仕事も気に入ってるけど、私たち、どこかに落ち着く必要あると思うわ。
Marc: 今までいろいろと引っ越しが多すぎたかもね。
Trina: そうね。頻繁に引っ越す暮らしもちょっといやになってきたかも。
Marc: 買うのと借りるの、どっちがいいと思う？
Trina: わからないわ…。買うとどれくらいかかるの？
Marc: どうだろう、僕もよくわからないな。持ち家があったら、それはいいんだろうけど…。
Trina: たぶん、今はちょっと手が届かないかもね、特にニューヨークでは。
Marc: 君のいとこが不動産屋で働いてなかったっけ？たぶんいろいろと教えてもらえるんじゃないかな。
Trina: そうね、彼だったら便宜をはかってくれるかも。明日電話してみるわ。

キーフレーズ

“a penny for your thoughts”　何を考えているの？

考え事をしている人に対して何について考えているかを聞くために使われるフレーズです。

例）カフェでHansとElsaが話しています。
Hans: A penny for your thoughts?
Elsa: Oh, I was just reminiscing about last year’s summer holiday.
Hans: 何考え込んでるの？
Elsa: えっ、ちょっと去年の楽しかった夏休みのこと思い出してたの。

“live out of a suitcase”　住む場所を頻繁に変える

頻繁に引っ越しをして、同じ場所にはあまり長く留まらないことを意味する表現です。

例）DarleneはStacieの旅行の経験について聞いています。
Darlene: I can’t believe you’ve been to so many places. That’s amazing!
Stacie: Yeah, I basically lived out of a suitcase for a year. It was a great experience.
Darlene: そんなにたくさんの場所行ってきたなんて、信じられないわ。すごいわね！
Stacie: うん。簡単に言うと1年間ずっと住所不定で暮らしてた感じよ。いい経験だったわ。

“beyond (one’s) means”　（値段が）高すぎて買えない

物やサービスなどの値段が自分にとって高すぎるために購入することができないことを言う際に使われる表現です。

例）DuncanとReginaがどこでランチを食べるか考えています。
Regina: I really want to try this place, it has amazing reviews.
Duncan: Honey, a 5-star restaurant is just a bit beyond our means right now.
Regina: このお店行ってみたいわ、レビューの評価がすごいのよ。
Duncan: ねえ、5つ星の店なんて、今の僕たちには高くて行けないよ。

“pull ( a few / some ) strings”　コネを使う

あるものを手に入れるために自分の人脈に頼ることや自分の影響力を使って知り合いなどの便宜をはかることを意味する表現です。

例）ReedとMorganが野球のチケットの話をしています。
Reed: I heard the game is already sold out. I was dying to go!
Morgan: My sister’s boyfriend works at the stadium. Maybe he can pull a few strings and get us tickets.
Reed: その試合もうチケット売り切れたらしいぜ。すごく行きたかったのに！
Morgan: 姉貴の彼氏が球場で働いてるんだ。もしかしたら、うまくやって俺たちのチケット手に入れてくれるかもよ。
