Hollie: So, are you excited about the gig on Friday?
Selina: That’s actually what I wanted to talk to you about.
Hollie: What’s up?
Selina: Do you think I could take a rain check this time?
Hollie: Why?
Selina: I’m completely snowed under at work. I really don’t think I can make it.
Hollie: Do you have any idea what a hot ticket this is?
Selina: I’m sorry. There’s a really slim chance I’ll get off work in time but you’d be better off giving the ticket to someone else.
Hollie: Is there really no way you might get off early?
Selina: It doesn’t look good and I wouldn’t want the ticket to go to waste.
Hollie: Just let me know if things change. I’ll hang on to your ticket for another day.
Selina: Thanks. I promise to make it up to you next time.
Selina: That’s actually what I wanted to talk to you about.
Hollie: What’s up?

キーフレーズ
“take a rain check” またの機会にしてもらう
予定していたことを急にキャンセルしなければならなくなり、代わりの日程などもはっきりしていない時に使われる表現です。
例）TimとBruceは週末野球をする計画について話しています。
Tim: Can I take a rain check this weekend? I think I’m coming down with the flu.
Bruce: Sure, no problem. Just take care of yourself and we’ll play next week.
Tim: ちょっとパスしてもいいかな、今週末。インフルエンザにかかったみたいなんだ。
Bruce: いいよ、いいよ。よく休んで元気になって。そしたら、来週できるから。
Tim: Can I take a rain check this weekend? I think I’m coming down with the flu.

“snowed under” 仕事に追われている
やらなければならない仕事などがたくさんあり、忙殺されていることを意味する表現です。
例）Earl は夕食の約束に遅れることを伝えるため、妻のMagdaに電話をしています。
Earl: I’m really sorry but I’m going to be late tonight. I’m totally snowed under here in the office.
Magda: I’ll leave your dinner in the microwave then. Don’t stay too late!
Earl: 本当にごめん、ちょっと今夜遅れそうなんだ。やらなければならない仕事が山ほどあって。
Magda: じゃあ、夕飯はレンジに入れておくわ。あんまり遅くならないでね。
Earl: I’m really sorry but I’m going to be late tonight. I’m totally snowed under here in the office.

“slim chance” 可能性が低いこと
ある事柄が実際に起こる可能性が非常に低く、それをあてにすべきではないことを示すためのカジュアルな表現です。
例）Toriと Kellyは有名俳優に会えることを期待し、劇場の外で待っています。
Tori: I hope he’ll sign my DVD!
Kelly: Don’t count on it. I think the chances of us even meeting him are really slim.
Tori: DVDにサインしてくれるといいな。
Kelly: 期待しない方がいいわよ。会える見込みだって、ほとんどないと思うわ。

“make it up to (someone)” 埋め合わせをする
人をがっかりさせた後で、いつかその埋め合わせをするつもりがあることを伝えるためによく使われる表現です。
例）JasonはガールフレンドのGwenに二人の記念日を忘れてしまったことを謝っています。
Gwen: I can’t believe you forgot! I even got you a present.
Jason: I’m so sorry honey. How about I take you on a trip this weekend to make it up to you?
Gwen: 忘れるなんて信じられない！プレゼントまで用意したのに。
Jason: 本当にごめん、この埋め合わせに週末、旅行に連れて行ってあげたら許してくれる？
Gwen: I can’t believe you forgot! I even got you a present.
Jason: I’m so sorry honey. How about I take you on a trip this weekend to make it up to you?
