Max: Hey, have you seen Cece?
Winston: Yeah, she just left, all dressed to the nines.
Max: Hmm, I wonder what the occasion is. I was going to lend her a CD we were talking about.
Winston: Well, if I had to take a shot in the dark, I’d say she probably went a date.
Max: Do you really think so?
Winston: She mentioned last week that she’d met some hot-shot lawyer, so I bet he asked her out.
Max: Aw, what? She doesn’t even like lawyers though. This sucks.
Winston: Give it up, Max. I know that you’re in love with her, but she’s way out of your league.
Max: Thanks for the vote of confidence. A guy can dream, can’t he?
Winston: Yeah, well it’s only a pipe dream. You’re better off finding someone more, shall we say, attainable.

キーフレーズ
“dressed to the nines” めかし込む
とてもおしゃれで高価な服を着ていることを意味する表現です。
例）JuneとBriaunaはある映画祭のレッドカーペットセレモニーを見ています。
June: I’m so excited to see what Alexis Fieri is wearing to the awards. I heard her dress this year is going to be fabulous.
Briauna: Oh, I know, I can’t wait. She’s always dressed to the nines.
June: Alexis Fieriがどんな服着てくるかすごく楽しみだわ。今年のドレスはすごいらしいわよ。
Briauna: 知っているわ。待ちきれないわね。彼女はいつもすごく着飾ってるからね。

特に根拠なく、推量でものを言うことを意味するフレーズです。
例）Nicoleは二人の最初のデートで花をくれたAdamにお礼を言っています。
Nicole: Lilies, thank you! How did you know they’re my favorite?
Adam: To be honest, I really didn’t. I just took a shot in the dark and got lucky.
Nicole: お花、ありがとう。どうして私がユリ好きなのわかったの？
Adam: ほんとのこと言うと、君の好きな花知らなくて、適当に選んだんだ。

例）Summerが兄のTomと競争率の高いインターンシップについて話しています。

Tom: Wow, good luck. I tried applying once when I was a university student, but it was way out of my league.
Summer: ホワイトハウス実習生に応募してみようかなって思ってるの。
Tom: そりゃすごい。がんばれよ。俺も大学のころ、一度試しに応募してみたんだけど、話にならなかったよ。

例）Georgeは友人Mandyギターで自分のオリジナル曲を弾くのを聞いています。

Mandy: That would be nice, but it’s only a pipe dream.
George: おっ、すごくいい曲だね。プロになれるよ。
Mandy: なれたらいいけど、まあ、夢物語ね。
