＜冬休みで帰省した大学生のDarrylを両親のMarcusとAndreaが空港まで迎えに来ました。＞

Darryl: Thanks for picking me up.
Andrea: Sure thing, honey.
Marcus: Besides, that means we can show you the new stadium.
Darryl: Stadium?
Andrea: Oh yeah, the new Red Wolves football stadium. Your father has been talking my ear off about it since it started going up.
Darryl: Wait, they’re building a new stadium in our town? When did this happen?
Marcus: They just broke ground last summer, but construction has been moving pretty quickly. You’ll see, we’re almost there.
Andrea: There it is, on the right.
Darryl: Wow, it’s huge! And it’s right in our backyard!
Marcus: Right? You don’t even need to get on the highway. Once the stadium’s open, I’m definitely getting season tickets.
Darryl: Wow, Dad, no wonder you’re so excited!
Andrea: Sure thing, honey.
Marcus: Besides, that means we can show you the new stadium.
Darryl: Stadium?
Andrea: Oh yeah, the new Red Wolves football stadium. Your father has been talking my ear off about it since it started going up.
Darryl: Wait, they’re building a new stadium in our town? When did this happen?

キーフレーズ
“talk (someone’s) ear off” うんざりさせるぐらい話す
一方的に話し続けて聞き手をうんざりさせることを意味する表現です。
例）Karenがチャリティーイベントに参加するよう友人のErikを説得しています。
Karen: Come on, it’s for a really good cause. It would mean a lot to me if you could go!
Erik: There’s no need to talk my ear off. I was already planning on going.
Karen: おいでよ、すごく立派な趣旨のイベントよ。あなたが来てくれたら、私すごくうれしいわ。
Erik: そんなにまくし立てなくてもいいよ、もう行くつもりだったから。
Karen: Come on, it’s for a really good cause. It would mean a lot to me if you could go!
Erik: There’s no need to talk my ear off. I was already planning on going.

“go up” 建設する
このgo upは建物などを建設することを意味するフレーズです。
例）2年ぶりに故郷に戻ったJulieが弟のEthanと話しています。
Julie: What’s this? Is that a new mall?
Ethan: Oh yeah, it went up last year. Let’s check it out. They have the best cinnamon rolls!
Julie: 何あれ？新しいショッピングモール？
Ethan: うん、去年できたんだ。ちょっと寄ってみようか。最高のシナモンロール売ってる店あるから。
Julie: What’s this? Is that a new mall?

“break ground” 着工する
建物などの建設を始めることを意味し、通常は基礎工事のために地面を掘ることを意味します。
例）Tedが従業員のSkyeと話しています。

Skye: Thanks, we just broke ground last weekend.
Ted: おめでとう、家建ててるらしいね、君のとこ。
Skye: ありがとうございます。先週着工したばかりなんです。

“in (one’s) backyard” すぐ近所に
自分が住んでいる場所の近くに位置していることを意味する表現です。
例）NoahがガールフレンドのOliviaと星を見るために近くの山に来ています。

Olivia: Wow, who knew such a romantic view existed right in our own backyard!
Noah: どうだい、ここの夜空は？
Olivia: すごい、こんな素敵な眺めが私たちのすぐ近くにあるなんて知らなかったわ。
