Owen:I know. Time’s really passed in the blink of an eye.
Cleo:We’ve changed quite a lot, haven’t we?
Owen:I’ll say! Remember when we first started dating, and you insisted on only wearing black?
Cleo:Oh, don’t remind me. Just looking at photos from then makes my toes curl.
Owen:Aww, you shouldn’t worry about it.
Cleo:But it’s really embarrassing!
Owen:Hey, we’ve all got skeletons in the closet. Plus, I thought it was cute…
Cleo:Really?
Owen:Of course! That’s why I asked you out!
Cleo:Because I only wore black?
Owen:Well, that wasn’t the only reason…

Owen:もちろんさ。だからこそ、付き合ってくれって君に言ったんだよ。
Cleo:黒しか着てなかったから？
Owen:まあ、それだけが理由じゃないけど…

キーフレーズ
“in the blink of an eye” 一瞬で
ある行為などが非常に素早く行われることや短期間で行われることを言う際に使われる表現です。
例）休暇中にスリに遭ったNancyが友人のViolaと話しています。
Viola: It’s too bad you were pick-pocketed on your holiday. Didn’t you notice anything?
Nancy: I barely had time to react. In the blink of an eye my wallet was gone!
Viola: 休暇中にスリに遭うなんて、気の毒だわ。全然気づかなかったの？
Nancy: 何か手を打つ時間なんてほとんどなかったわ。一瞬にして、お財布が消えてなくなってたの！

Viola: 休暇中にスリに遭うなんて、気の毒だわ。全然気づかなかったの？

“I’ll say” まったくその通り
相手の言ったことに対して強く同意することを表すために使われるフレーズです。
例）DanとガールフレンドのAndreaが2人で食事をした高級レストランの話をしています。
Andrea: Dinner was great last night! The steak was so good…
Dan: I’ll say! It was one of the best steaks I’ve ever tasted.
Andrea: 昨日の夕飯素晴らしかったわ！ステーキがすごくおいしくて…
Dan: 本当にそうだね！今まで食べた中でも指折りのステーキだよ。
Andrea: Dinner was great last night! The steak was so good…
Dan: I’ll say! It was one of the best steaks I’ve ever tasted.
Andrea: 昨日の夕飯素晴らしかったわ！ステーキがすごくおいしくて…
Dan: 本当にそうだね！今まで食べた中でも指折りのステーキだよ。
“make (one’s) toes curl” 非常に恥ずかしい思いをさせる
人に気まずい思いをさせたり、とても恥ずかしい思いをさせることを意味するフレーズです。
例）Lilyがある恥ずかしい出来事を妹のEleanorに話しています。
Lily: Anyway, halfway through the day I realized that my skirt was caught in my underwear, so it had been showing the entire time.
Eleanor: Oh no! Just imagining it is making my toes curl.
Lily: それでね、途中で気づいたの、私。スカートのすそが下着に挟まっていたことを。だからずっと丸見えだったのよ。
Eleanor: あら、やだ！想像しただけでもすごく恥ずかしくなるわ。

例）友人Timの10代の頃の写真を見つけたJordanがそのことでTimをからかっています。
Jordan: Look at that outfit! And that hair! What were you thinking?
Tim: Oh, please, don’t act like you don’t have any skeletons in your closet!
Jordan: 見ろよ、この服装！それに、髪型！何だって、こんな格好してたんだよ？
Tim: おい、まるで自分には恥ずかしい過去がないみたいなこと言うのやめてくれないか！
