映画を見た感想を伝える
＜コメディ映画を見終えたふたりは、お互いの感想を話しています。＞

Xander: So, what did you think?
Winnie: Didn’t you hear me laugh? I was laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes!
Xander: Yeah, that was probably the funniest movie I’ve seen in years.
Winnie: It’s hands down the best comedy I’ve seen… ever!
Xander: It was really good but come on, that’s a bit of a stretch, don’t you think?
Winnie: Nope, I stand by what I said. I’ve never laughed so hard in a theater.
Xander: I agree that it was hilarious but don’t you think some of the jokes were a bit near the mark?
Winnie: Sure, it wasn’t exactly politically correct but at least they made fun of everyone. They didn’t just pick on one group of people.
Xander: I guess you’re right. The French bulldog cracked me up.
Winnie: Yep, you can’t go wrong with a funny looking dog. Works every time.
Xander: So, you want to get go grab some dinner?
Winnie: Definitely, I’m starving!

Xander: そうだね。たぶん今まで見たうちで一番おもしろい映画かも。
Winnie: 断然一番よ、今まで私が観たコメディの中で。
Xander: うん、本当におもしろかった。でもさ、ほら、ちょっと無理があったように思うけど、そう思わないかい？
Winnie: いいえ、私の意見は変わらないわ。映画館でこんなに笑ったことはないもの。
Xander: 笑えるってことは間違いないけど、でもちょっときつすぎる冗談とかもあったと思わないか？
Winnie: たしかに差別や偏見がまったくなかったとは言わないわ。でも、少なくとも見ている私たちを楽しませてくれたでしょ。それに特定の社会的集団の人だけをからかっていたわけでもないし。
Xander: まあ、そうだけどね。あのフレンチ・ブルドッグには笑えた。
Winnie: そうそう。不格好な犬を使えば、必ず受けるわ。毎回笑える。
Xander: ところで、夕飯食べ行く？
Winnie: もちろん。飢え死にしそうよ。
Winnie: 私が笑ってたの聞こえなかった？笑いすぎて涙が出てきたわ。

キーフレーズ
“hands down” 断然
同じ種類のものや人と比べ、一番であることを確信していて、その考えは変わらない時に使われるカジュアルなフレーズです。
例）ショッピング中のMargaretとLisaは、レストランを探しています。
Margaret: How about this Mexican restaurant? It looks good.
Lisa: I’ve been there before. They have hands down the worst tacos in the city. Let’s go somewhere else.
Margaret: このメキシカンはどう？よさそうじゃない？
Lisa: ここ来たことあるわ。ここのタコス、間違いなくこの町で一番まずいわよ。他にしましょう。
Margaret: How about this Mexican restaurant? It looks good.
Lisa: I’ve been there before. They have hands down the worst tacos in the city. Let’s go somewhere else.
Margaret: このメキシカンはどう？よさそうじゃない？

“a stretch” 誇張、こじつけ
ある事柄が必ずしも正確ではなく、事実が誇張されていることを言うために使う表現です。
例）美術館を訪れたふたりは、とある絵画について作品の感想を話しています。
Prudence: This piece is awful. I like contemporary art but I think the artist here was just lazy.
Millicent: I wouldn’t go so far as saying it’s awful but calling it art is kind of a stretch.
Prudence: この作品はひどいわ。現代美術は好きだけど、ここの画家は単に手抜きしてるだけよ。
Millicent: 「ひどい」とまでは言わないけど、ちょっとこじつけっぽいわね、この芸術は。
Prudence: This piece is awful. I like contemporary art but I think the artist here was just lazy.

“stand by what～ said” 考えを変える気がない
自分の意見を変えるつもりがなく、反論されても、その考えを否定する証拠を見せられても、同じ意見であることを言うためによく使われる表現です。
例）雪景色が好きなJasonは、今年最初の雪についてSamと話をしています。
Sam: I know it looks nice and all but it gets icy and dirty so quickly.
Jason: I stand by what I said. It transforms the landscape and it’s just awesome, even if that doesn’t last long.
Sam: 雪景色いいっていうのはわかるけど、すぐに凍って滑りやすくなったり、ぬかるんだりするんだよね。
Jason: それでも僕の考えは変わらないよ。景色をすっかり変えてしまうんだから、とにかく素晴らしいよ。たとえ長くはもたないとしても。

“near the mark” ほぼ事実である、（冗談などが）きつい
ある事柄がほぼ事実であることを表します。また、冗談などが事実に近いがゆえに失礼にあたることも意味する表現です。
例）パーティで話かけてきた人について、TinaとEllenは話をしています。
Tina: He was a bit awkward, don’t you think?
Ellen: Awkward? I think outright rude would be nearer the mark.
Tina: ちょっと無骨な感じじゃない、今の人？
Ellen: 無骨？ あからさまに失礼だった、と言った方が正確だわ。
